Enabling NSW Government priorities
The NSW Digital Strategy is about delivering digital with purpose for the people, businesses and communities of our State. To do this, digital technology must help the NSW Government deliver on their priorities.
The NSW Government priorities are:
- Building better homes for NSW
- Building essential services that people rely on
- Building better communities for NSW
Digital technology is a critical channel for people to operate, engage and interact with the NSW Government. Having the right digital technology in place plays a crucial role in making NSW a great place to live.
Building better homes for NSW
We are building better homes for NSW close to essential infrastructure and jobs, where people want to live, to ensure we continue to address the housing crisis for renters and people wanting to enter the housing market. Everyone in NSW needs a place to call home.
This outcome is reflected in the following:
2A: Exploring how AI can help NSW councils create workflow efficiencies in the local development application (DA) process through initiatives such as the AI Early Adopter Grant Program. Grants support the improved efficiency of DA processing, an improved user experience during processing and help to achieve annual dwelling targets in NSW.
2B: Driving productivity and digital uplift across the infrastructure sector with the Infrastructure Digitalisation Roadmap. This roadmap sets out a framework to achieve adoption and application of digital technology through the entire infrastructure lifecycle.
3B: Transforming the building lifecycle to ensure NSW produces trustworthy residential buildings with the eConstruction Program.
3B: Embedding Digital Infrastructure in what we build by implementing Digital Infrastructure Requirements to make sure we’re creating smart, place-based solutions for the urban environment.
12: Redesign the Planning Portal to enhance user-centricity and accessibility and help streamline the development approval process
22: Support government priorities of accelerating housing supply and improving productivity through continued digital transformation
28: Continue trials and expansion of NSW Government’s wider AI in NSW Planning package
- Mission 2: Land iQ - Trialing a purpose-built AI application for educational use in schools
Building essential services that people rely on
We are ensuring we have the essential services like education and healthcare that the people of NSW rely on, that pays our essential workers fairly, that keeps our communities safe and supports local jobs. This includes paying fair wages to our frontline staff (i.e. teachers, nurses, paramedics, police force and other essential workers).
We are sustainably rebuilding essential services that care for our community such as increasing protection for victim-survivors of domestic and family violence and building accessible and affordable transport options.
This outcome is reflected in the following:
1A: Providing access to government services through Mobile Service Centres for people who are unable to visit a service centre. Specific initiatives, such as the Kangaroo Bus, continue to expand our mobile service offering by supporting Aboriginal communities in rural and remote areas.
1C: Supporting agencies to connect with communities through Multicultural NSW Language Service Providers. Multicultural NSW supports a range of languages and improves access to services and programs, especially in regional areas, through well-designed interpreting and translating services.
1D: Enabling Aboriginal communities to self-determine services delivered in their communities through the Local Decision Making initiative.
3B: Upgrading the digital and physical infrastructure of public spaces such as Penrith Stadium to improve the community experience.
3C: Upgrading Opal ticketing systems with Opal Next Generation to improve trip planning, payment and information access for NSW passengers.
4A: Supporting victims and survivors of domestic and family violence. The Digital NSW Accelerator team is working with the Department of Communities and Justice on the DV Notify app, which will provide real-time information to victims and survivors when a perpetrator leaves custody.
4B: Helping people navigate the aftermath of a data breach through ID Support NSW. This service supports NSW Government departments to respond to data breaches and notify affected individuals, shares free resources and tools with individuals, groups and businesses to protect against identity theft and data breaches, and helps people restore their stolen or misused identity documents.
4: Increase access to government services for people through improved translator and interpreter services
6: Build a NSW Digital ID to enable citizens to securely prove their identity when transacting online
11: Implement legislation to improve safety and recovery services for victims of identity theft
17: By 2026, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people having equal levels of digital inclusion
52: Increase uptake of digital Working with Children Check to support frontline workers
- Mission 1 : Rural Access Gap program - Addressing the digital divide between rural and metropolitan NSW public schools
- Mission 2: Creating Safer Crowded Places - Testing innovative technology to improve public safety in crowded places.
- Mission 3: Smart Irrigation Management for Parks and Cool Towns (SIMPaCT)
- Mission 3: Single Digital Patient Record
Building better communities for NSW
We are building and upgrading the roads, schools, hospitals, transport infrastructure, energy systems and housing we need to improve the lives of people in NSW. This means supporting community mental health and wellbeing.
We are focused on enhancing emergency response and disaster support and recovery while rebuilding an energy system into one that is affordable, clean and reliable for everyone.
This outcome is reflected in the following:
3D: Developing new solutions to reduce carbon emissions by offering grants for Clean Technology Innovation that invest in researchers, innovators and entrepreneurs.
3D: Improving water efficiency and creating cooler outdoor environments using Smart Irrigation Management for Parks and Cool Towns (SIMPaCT).
4A: Trialing innovative new connectivity such as large area wi-fi to provide better coverage in remote areas and support first responders in emergency scenarios.
4A: Providing notifications and warnings for floods, tsunami, severe weather and fire in NSW with the Hazards Near Me app and Hazard Publisher. Delivered through the HazardWatch ecosystem, this has reduced emergency services warning times from 30 minutes to 3 minutes, saving lives and property.
4A: Eliminating the need for customers to resubmit their information to multiple government departments, while recovering from the impact of a disaster. The Tell Your Story Once initiative enables a more coordinated disaster recovery approach by securely sharing customer registration information, with consent, across NSW Government agencies.
5B: Continuing to invest in trainees, apprentices, internships and graduate programs such as the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) Industry Degree Academy (IDeA), the eHealth NSW internship and the NSW Government Graduate program to provide hands-on experience. The 1000 NSW Public Sector Apprentices and Trainees Program will position the NSW Government as a leader in the employment of apprentices and trainees. These programs are a way to develop new talent and grow digital capability within the public sector.
42: Explore opportunities to increase energy efficiency of digital resources in support of the goal to reach net zero emissions by 2050.
43: Embed circular economy principles in accordance with the NSW Waste and Sustainable Materials Strategy
44: Support NSW Government progress towards Net Zero and sustainability targets through delivery of a new emissions platform
48: Improve emergency response and coordination through development of a new emergency management operating system
- Mission 4: Hazards Near Me - An app for emergency warnings and advice for floods, tsunamis and fires in NSW.
- Mission 5: eHealth Digital Academy - Modernising workforce capability within eHealth NSW.
