It just got easier for people creating digital services including websites, apps and other products within the NSW Government. The Beta version of the Digital Design System (DDS) was launched by Minister Dominello on Tuesday 18 December 2018. The DDS will make it easier for creators to design, build and deliver digital services that are accessible and seamless for users.
The DDS is built upon a foundational Digital Design Standard with six parts that underpin how the NSW Government designs digital services:
- Create with purpose - know what we're aiming to achieve and why
- Design with users, for users - meet user needs
- Reuse and repurpose - avoid reinventing the wheel
- Continuously improve - respond and adapt to change
- Be open, accountable and collaborative - share and be transparent
- Respect privacy and maintain security - build trust and confidence

What are the benefits of the DDS?
- Accessibility is not negotiable. Not only are there guides to help you write and design with accessibility in mind, there are pre-written components that already meet accessibility standards
- People come first. All parts of the DDS are designed to help you create digital services that put the user's needs first.
- Duplication will be a thing of the past.As a central repository for guides and reusable components, you don't need to start from scratch.
- On brand every time.No more guesswork; find the exact hexadecimal colour, correct font or guide for writing alt text. And it's all in one place.
Ultimately, for the citizen, we need consistency across agencies. And we will get there. This is what the #Digital #DesignSystem is set up to do. It puts citizens first, says @VictorDominello pic.twitter.com/69PcniHew3

What's next?
The first iteration of the DDS is just the beginning.
We welcome your feedback on any part of the DDS, including the Digital Design Standard.
We're always looking for people to join the community of creators to contribute content, expertise, learnings and case studies.
We'll be showcasing our work throughout 2019. Keep an eye out for updates.
