NSW Government’s Mobile Phone Detection Camera Program is targeted to reduce road fatalities and serious injuries by 30 per cent by 2021, and to zero by 2056. This program plays a critical role in addressing other high-risk behaviours on our roads such as speeding and running a red light.
This program has been delivered in collaboration with Transport for NSW and Revenue NSW. Mobile phone cameras target drivers and riders who illegally use a mobile phone across NSW anywhere, anytime. These cameras include fixed and transportable cameras.
The system operates day and night, and in all weather conditions. It uses artificial intelligence to automatically review images and detect offending drivers. Images that the automated system considers likely to contain a driver illegally using a mobile phone are verified by authorised personnel.
Since the launch of the trial period, Revenue NSW has configured 49 camera sites and continuously receives images from Transport for NSW. It has successfully processed 23,000 infringements since commencement of this initiative. These cameras have successfully proven to help prevent crashes and reduce road trauma in NSW.
