In the past people travelling by public transport didn’t have the ability to pay as you go, had to manage carrying physical cards or queue up to buy an Opal single trip ticket.
Contactless payment has introduced a quick and easy way to pay for your trip on all public transport on the Opal network using linked device, or credit and debit cards.
Available on trains, ferries, light rail services and buses, contactless payment offers the same travel benefits of an adult Opal card. Customers simply tap on and off consistently with the same card or device. This includes the weekly travel reward and the transfer discount.
The project is the largest geographical contactless public transport payment system in the world, with more than 22,500 readers spread across 40,000 kilometres square. In recognition of its success, Transport for NSW won the Sydney Smart City Award and was a finalist in the NSW Government Digital Awards.
