The use of medicines is one of the most common yet complex therapeutic interventions, and medication safety is one of the biggest challenges that all healthcare systems face. The use of Electronic Medication Management (eMeds) is giving NSW Health's nurses, doctors and pharmacists a new and improved way forward from paper charting, by removing the potential for transcription errors and flagging medication clashes or allergies.
eMeds is the biggest roll-out of its kind in Australia and one of the largest globally. This component of the electronic medical record is now available at 195 public health facilities in NSW, and has improved the accuracy, visibility and legibility of medication management information for more than two million NSW Health inpatients annually.
Furthermore, it is enabling clinicians to deliver safer, better and smarter healthcare to patients. In the rural health districts, for example, eMeds has resulted in a 50 per cent improvement in omitted medication doses, and an 8 per cent uplift in compliance with safe prescribing practices.
