Provision of data and insights for public use

This data is integrated in apps used by millions of passengers each day and informs state strategies and plans. Data is also available through visualisations published on the Transport website, recognising the need for simplified and accessible insights beyond the developer community.

Achievements

The Open Data Hub was established in April 2016 at the Future Transport summit and replaced the Transport Data Exchange (TDX) Program. Today the Hub provides 228 datasets as well as maps and other interactive data visualisations. The Hub has over 51,000 active users, 11,300 registered applications and 28.6 billion API hits.

Engagement

Almost 1,000 developers and community members actively collaborate on the Open Data Forum with support from Transport for NSW staff. Beyond data provision, the agency runs Innovation Challenges that empower entrepreneurs to develop impactful solutions, driving real value for customers and fostering successful businesses. Notable use cases include the Bus Boarding Assistant Challenge, which trialled 2 mobile apps to help people who need boarding assistance to easily hail a bus, the Active Transport Bike Riding Innovation Challenge, which facilitated the integration of cycling data into 3 digital solutions to reduce barriers and promote the benefits of riding, and the Multilingual Innovation Challenge which saw NSW public transport information in 12 different languages integrated into 2 digital solutions for customers. The program continues with the current Context Aware Innovation Challenge, which is aimed at enhancing how passengers access and interact with transport information during unplanned disruptions.
