Improving access, trust and efficiency through secure digital identity verification

The NSW Digital ID provides individuals with a secure, opt-in digital identity that will enable them to prove their identity online or in-person using biometric facial verification. This will replace the need to use physical identity documents such as birth certificates, photo cards or driver licences.

Delivered via the Service NSW mobile app, the NSW Digital ID prioritises privacy, security and inclusion, allowing users to control what information they share, with whom, and for what purpose. It will enable faster access to government services, reduce identity-related fraud, and improve service delivery by simplifying how people prove their identity.

The NSW Digital ID will underpin a broader ecosystem of government and business transactions where identity assurance is required. It also supports broader state and national priorities for data security, customer-centric digital transformation, and interoperability (sharing of information) across jurisdictions and sectors. The system will operate within a robust legislative and policy framework, ensuring alignment with privacy laws, cyber security standards, and federal interoperability requirements.

Achievements

Over the next 12 to 24 months, the NSW Digital ID will be piloted across government transactions as a trusted, inclusive and scalable identity solution. The goal is to provide NSW residents with a safer, faster, and privacy-preserving way to prove their identity, while reducing manual effort and fraud across public services.
